The Lord of Opium Nancy Farmer This book takes up where its sequel, The House of the Scorpion, left, and the action doesn't stop!! Matt is now the Lord of Opium (it's not just the name of the book!) and he needs to establish his power--now. It's probably at least a fourth grade reading/content level.

No Passengers Beyond This Point Gennifer Choldenko India, Finn, and Mouse aren't thrilled when they learn they must leave their house, but the plot takes a wild twist when the plane to Uncle Red's lands them in a strange world. There they must work together to escape. The only problem is that they are three very diverse siblings. Anyone old enough to read could read this (including first graders--one of the protagonists is six!)

The People of Sparks Jeanne DuPrau The citizens of Ember find themselves with strange new people in a strange new world. When they don't have any other choice, they stay in a village, but the people aren't too happy. It doesn't take long before the mutterings of "intruders" spark into something bigger.... Can Doon and Lina save their city again? Third grade up reading level.

The Prophet of Yonwood Jeanne DuPrau The third book in the Ember quartet, The Prophet of Yonwood steps away from Ember into the time during the Crisis. Nickie is a girl with a mission in the secluded town of Yonwood: keep Greenhaven, her late great-grandfather's house. With the war looming over the people's heads, she struggles to decipher many things about the town, from the lady everyone listens to called the Prophet to her father's strange postcards, while completing this.

The Diamond of Darkhold Jeanne DuPrau Doon and Lina are back with Ember where they try to uncover their city's secrets. The journey back leads them to some clues which they try to decipher, for the good of the villagers as well as their own curiosity.

Every Soul a Star Wendy Mass I. Love. This. Book!!! Ally has loved living at Moon Shadow Camp almost her whole life, preparing for this eclipse. Bree is being dragged out to Moon Shadow Camp for it. And Jack comes as a way to escape the world and summer school. All three stories become intertwined with the eclipse forewarning the end/beginning of many adventures the whole time. I. Just. Love. It!!! (It's not a hard book to read, as with all Wendy Mass books, but I suggest third grade on up.)

Doll Bones Holly Black When the Queen of their games comes to life in Poppy's dreams, she and her best friends Zach and Alice embark on a quest to put the old china doll to rest. Or will the doll's mysterious past get in the way? Slightly spooky, but not too much, it would be a good book for fourth or fifth or sixth graders.

Ghost Hawk Susan Cooper Another greeeeeeeat book!!!!! Little Hawk must survive the winter on his own to prove he is a man, but that is just the start of his troubles! The white men are taking his peoples' land and giving them lethal diseases. But what can he do? Then he meets John, a young English boy who changes his life. Little Hawk and John are an unlikely pair, but their unique friendship and story give an amazing story! (Hint/Suggestion/Not Really A Spoiler: There's a point in the story where you will want to stop reading, but you. Must. Not!)

The Chicago World's Fair JoAnne Grote This is a short book featuring the 1893 Chicago World's Fair and Esther and Ted, two cousins distraught about their city's poverty. While the Fair is the center of the book, when they return to Minneapolis they come up with a plan to help others. Can two twelve-year-olds really make a difference?

Fair Weather Richard Peck Rosie has never been much farther off her family's farm than the town, until a letter from her city-dwelling aunt comes inviting the family to the Chicago World's Fair. The plot is well-written and the Fair described well, but my favorite aspect is her eccentric Granddad! Most likely a fourth grade reading level and up, but my mom enjoyed it, too.

Stealing Magic Marianne Malone Sequel to The Sixty-Eight Rooms, Ruthie and Jack are back. While they are exploring the rooms, they realize that some of the pieces are missing! Who could it be.... Same reading level as The Sixty-Eight Rooms.

Shorter chapter books:

Judy Moody Goes to College Megan McDonald Second-third grade level (explains why my sister was reading it too, I guess.)

Drangonbreath Ursula Vernon Apart from being a "mythical" dragon that can't breathe fire, Danny Dragonbreath also has terrible grades and no fear. The latter comes in handy when he visits his uncle for an essay about the ocean! This is a total read-aloud book--it's very funny!

My Weird School Daze: Mrs. Dole is Out of Control! Dan Gutman Another great read aloud with crazy characters!

My Weird School: Mr. Carbles is Losing his Marbles! Dan Gutman The superintendent and the principal are in a "war"! What can A.J. do?

Here's what I read in July that's kind of my grade-level:

Warriors: The Power of Three: Sunrise Erin Hunter An... interesting conclusion to the series/introduction to the next.

Jake and Lily Jerry Spinelli I've heard a lot about this book, so I decided to read it. It really gave me a new look on how being a twin can be difficult! All in all, I enjoyed it. Again, my first-going-into-second grade sister is reading it; the reading is easy, but I think it's geared more towards fifth-ish grade.

Warriors Super Edition: Firestar's Quest Erin Hunter Taking place between the first and second Warriors series, this book follows Firestar and Sandstorm as they attempt to bring back SkyClan. The plot is very good for a stand-alone, and the SkyClan cats have very unique characteristics! Probably the same grade-level as the rest of Warriors.

Spy School Stuart Gibbs I discovered this book through the Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Program, and LOVED it! The characters, the plot, the details, and the style of writing all appealed to me; it's a fourth-fifth-six grade book.

The Sixty-Eight Rooms Marianne Malone When Ruthie and Jack discover a key in the Thorne Rooms, they find a puzzling mystery that takes them back in time.... Fourth grade level, but my mom enjoyed it, too. :)

All the Wrong Questions: When Did You See Her Last? Lemony Snicket As with most books by the same author, this book was confusing and had a surprising ending--but in a good way! Anyone who can read it could read it, but it takes some deciphering!

Loser Jerry Spinelli A fantastic book about a boy who doesn't quite seem to fit in, and yet sees others in a way only he can. The climax comes when he is in fifth grade, so fifth graders could probably relate the best.

Escape From Mr. Lemoncello's Library Chris Gabenstein This seemed to be a zany/cool cross between different books--from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to The Westing Game to The Candy Makers--that had interesting characters. I loved the creativity the author used to think of the library itself and the clues integrated within. While everyone can enjoy this, the one downside was that it was really hard to figure out the clues for yourself....

Poached Stuart Gibbs After reading Spy School, I decided to try another Gibbs book, and once again loved it! Poached is about Teddy, a boy who lives at a giant zoo in Texas, and the kidnapping of a koala. I made the mistake of reading it BEFORE Poached, as it actually comes after. Probably the same reading level as Spy School.

The City of Ember Jeanne Duprau I can't really describe anything without giving the ending away, but let's just say Lina and Doon's city is falling apart, and they seem to be the only ones who notice or care.... Probably upper-elementary school level.

Schooled Gordon Korman Capricorn Anderson is a middle-school hippie, and when his grandmother falls out of a tree, he must learn how to survive amidst bullies. Probably middle school reading level.

The Sixty-Eight Rooms Marianne Malone Yes, I read it twice.

Other shorter kids' books:

My Weirder School: Miss Child has Gone Wild! Dan Gutman These are funny, with oddball characters, including the protagonist who happens to hate school. I think first-second grade on up would be fine reading this series.

Stink: The Incredible Shrinking Kid Megan McDonald Two words: Poor salamander!

Stink and The Incredible Super-Galactic Jawbreaker Megan McDonald Second-grade level....

Notable picture books:

Look Up! Bird-Watching in Your Own Backyard Annette LeBlanc Cate This was very informative, and kept my attention--mostly because the birds had a ton of funny comments!

The Road to Oz Kathleen Krull This is about L. Frank Baum and how he came to write The Wizard of Oz. It, too, is informative, and the illustrations are beautiful.

I'm in Charge of Celebrations Byrd Baylor I happened to see this at my grandma's house, decided to read it, and found it VERY different than what I expected! A girl throws celebrations for "ordinary" desert wonders, explaining them in poetry-type stanzas. The style of writing was my favorite here.

For this summer, I'm keeping track of all the books I read, or at least the chapter books, because I read a gazillion picture books, too. :)

Here's what I read in June that is or is slightly below a sixth grade reading level:

Warriors: The New Prophecy: Starlight Erin Hunter This is a great series; I'm not quite sure why I never read Warriors before. I'm not an It's probably at a fourth to sixth grade reading level, although younger kids (like my first grade sister) can read and enjoy them, as are most other Warriors books.

Warriors: The New Prophecy: Twilight Erin Hunter Same series....

Stones in Water Donna Jo Napoli A FANTASTIC historical fiction about a non-Jewish boy in World War II. The reading level could easily be fourth grade, but some of the content is more of a fifth or sixth grade level.

Warriors: The New Prophecy: Sunset Erin Hunter Same as before....

Warriors: The Power of Three: The Sight Erin Hunter This is a well-written hook to the next Warriors series; I like the way the new characters are introduced. (A note on the entire Warriors series: you MUST read the books in order, or else nothing will make sense! [This is more true for the different series than the stand alone books.])

Warriors: The Power of Three: Dark River Erin Hunter The plot in this one is AWESOME!!

Warriors: The Power of Three: Outcast Erin Hunter Same series....

Warriors: The Power of Three: Eclipse Erin Hunter There are very mysterious characters in this book!

Masterpiece Elise Broach I'll admit, when I first started this I didn't love it. But you MUST keep reading because I loved everything about it: from the way the main character is a beetle to the deceptive twists in the plot! I think most fourth graders would have no problem reading it; but it is something art enthusiasts of all ages would enjoy.

Warriors: The Power of Three: Long Shadows Erin Hunter I think this was my favorite book in the series because the perspective switch is very important here and many puzzling enigmas are revealed.

This is what else I read (excluding picture books) in June:

The Lemonade War Series: The Bell Bandit Jacqueline Davies A good series with vocabulary words at the start of each chapter based on the books' topic/theme, although it's definitely aimed toward lower elementary school (first-fourth grade). (Note: This isn't the first book in the series.)

The Lemonade War Series: The Candy Smash Jacqueline Davies Same series....

Geronimo Stilton: Paws Off, Cheddarface! Elisabetta Dami Another humorous series where the main characters are mice. (Note: This isn't the first book in the series.)

Kit: Kit Learns a Lesson: A School Story Valerie Tripp An American Girl book; it tells the reader interesting facts about life in the Great Depression. (I read this back in first grade, but now my sister is reading the series so I just picked it up one day.)

Junie B. Jones and the Yucky Blucky Fruitcake Barbara Park No comment.

The Lemonade War Series: The Magic Trap Jacqueline Davies Same as before....

I mean, fourth grade.

This was the second time I read The Penderwicks, and again I thought it was awesome. What's The Penderwicks? It is a very exciting "summer tale of four sisters, two rabbits, and a very interesting boy," as it says on the cover, and I must agree. The author did an excellent job making pictures in my mind as well as using good descriptive words. I like many of them, but I don't remember to use them often... Here are the ones I liked best: fate, glare, discussion, cozy, exhausted, dwelling, swampy, creamiest, glorious. I like them because all of them have a synonym, but they are all better at describing than their synonyms. An example is discussion: you could say conversation, but a discussion is more of a lively, interactive, exciting conversation then just.. a conversation. I hope you get the idea. And of course, if you want to see more, you can read it yourself!

Edenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10500931398414063709noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258037007474275763.post-14356680992396095222013-06-12T13:40:00.003-07:002013-06-12T13:40:58.366-07:00The Trumpet of the Swan, E.B. White, 252 pages, WARNING: this also spoils a tiny bitFourth grade (but it could be anywhere between third and fifth grade)...

The Trumpet of the Swan is truly a different book than you might expect. It involves way more than you would think from the cover and title. It also involves a problem and a solution. The problem is that a trumpeter swan, Lois, is born dumb, not being able to speak. When he and his family migrate, he falls in love with a young swam, and his heart is broken when she ignores him because he is unable to call to her. The cob, Lois' father, decides he must find one of the "brass things that is called a trumpet and teach Lois how to play it so he can be able to call to that good-for-nothing young swan!" And so he sets out and manages to steal a trumpet from an instrument shop for Lois. So after having a visit with Sam, his friend, and learning how to read and write and acquires a chalkboard and chalk to communicate with humans, Lois sets out to earn some money. Sam says his camp is in need of a bugler. Lois finds his first job, which leads him to more. Once he has earned over $5000, Lois returns to his home, meets the swan he loves, and manages to catch her attention. Then Lois gives the money to his father, who returns it to the store, and comes home safely again. Lois is overjoyed and thanks his father.

I know, I know. It's long. Sorry. And it spoils some parts. Sorry. But it's a summary. And you can't exactly summarize without either spoiling or cliffhanging. Sorry.Edenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10500931398414063709noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258037007474275763.post-73803185484024592352013-06-07T16:08:00.001-07:002013-06-09T05:23:36.101-07:00The Year of Mrs. Agnes, Kirkpatrick Hill, 113 pagesAgain, fourth grade (though it's more like a third grade level)...

This book, The Year of Mrs. Agnes, is told by Frederika (Fred for short) and how their fish-smelling village never holds more one teacher for long. That's until Mrs. Agnes comes. Maybe it's because she can't smell, but for whatever reason, she stays. She goes away, and Fred is afraid that she is just like the other teachers, but in the end, she comes back to teach for another school year.

At the end, it kind of leaves me hanging, wanting to know more about what happens the next school year. Does she change at all? Does the school change at all? Do the pupils change at all? Does anything change? I suggest the author write a sequel, and tell about how this year was different from the first, or make the book longer, as it's just a little more than 100 pages or so. However, overall, I liked this book and (I know you know what I'm going to say:) I recommend it!Edenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10500931398414063709noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258037007474275763.post-2990465163424920842013-06-07T12:52:00.000-07:002013-06-08T05:14:27.795-07:00The Witches, Roald Dahl, 208 pages; WARNING: This slightly spoils the book! From fourth grade as well...

Our entire fourth grade recently (not so recent not that I am almost in sixth grade) just read one of Roald Dahl's best books, The Witches. It is about a boy whose parents dies and his adventures with his grandmamma in the Hotel Magnificent, where they are staying for the summer. The boy's grandmamma prepares him for any encounter with a witch, but he isn't ready when he comes face-to-face with the Grand High Witch of All the World. Along with this encounter, he overhears the witches' masterplan (how do rid the world of children) and gets turned into a mouse by the Grand High Witch herself. The boy finds Grandmamma and together they think of a plan to stop the witches' plan in several ways, all to be able to complete in eight years time, when the boy, now a mouse with a short life, and his grandmamma, at an old age, will die together knowing that they have done a good deed.

I modified this because the actual version ruined the entire plot and excitement of the whole book, so it would actually be four sentences longer, but I changed it to one...Edenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10500931398414063709noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258037007474275763.post-70147914365922601632013-06-07T12:38:00.001-07:002013-06-07T12:38:04.706-07:00Boy -- Tales of a Childhood, Roald Dahl, I've decided not to rate anymore, 176 pages

Roal Dahl is one of my favorite authors, and I just read
another one his books. The book is called Boy, and tells about Roald Dahl’s
life, starting before he was born. It tells a little about his father's life, how he married, and how they found a good home. Then Roald Dahl was born, thus starting his adventures. There are about five sections, the first starting with his life at home, and then his various schools, and finally, his job selling Shell oil/gasoline, and other jobs. My favorite paragraph happens to be the last.

The last paragraph is, "...But that is another story. It has nothing to do with childhood or school or Gobstoppers or dead mice or Boazers or summer holidays among the islands of Norway. It is a different tale altogether, and if all goes well, I may have I shot at telling it one of these days." I like it because it tells almost a summary of the story; not about the schools, but about weird/funny/sad/all-of-that-kind-of-asdjectives events that Roald Dahl remembers from his childhood. NOt necessarily the important ones, or the funny ones, but a mixture of everything:funny, sad, painful... you get the idea. And (like I always say) I recommend this book to you!!!

Reading Responses...Hi again! I'm soooooooooo sorry I haven't been blogging for almost a year, but honestly, I've either forgotten or else been too busy :-(. However, at my school we have to read 25 books each year (I always read more like 250). But in order to actually prove that we have read those books, we have to write reading responses. I wrote quite a few in third grade (the requirement was a short summary), a lot in fourth grade (first quarter requirements were one paragraph answering one question from a list of questions, second quarter requirements were one paragraph answering one question from a list of questions and one paragraph summary, third quarter requirements were one paragraph answering one question from a list of questions and one paragraph summary, and so on), and more in fifth grade (requirements were choosing five questions from a list of questions and answering them). I've decided to just copy them (or as many as I can find) more or less how I wrote them, and I'll say what books were from which grade so you get the idea of what grade-level they are.Edenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10500931398414063709noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258037007474275763.post-75624403779992851142012-07-23T13:26:00.001-07:002012-07-23T13:26:09.243-07:00Little FishesI was looking at all the options for adding animations were, and I came across some little fish. M. Montgomery, 4.6 stars, 274 pages Anne has moved away from her dear House of Dreams to Ingleside, because the family was growing too large: at seven, and with a baby on the way! Her children have their funny friends, faults and foes, but they're put to a slight pause when the horribly aggravating Aunt Mary Maria come, and stays longer than called for. Even with this, and much more, Anne loves the Ingleside happenings until she starts to worry that ______* doesn't care for her as much as usual. It just takes Anne to make her husband love her again!Edenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10500931398414063709noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258037007474275763.post-64553632140839644862012-07-20T13:38:00.001-07:002012-07-20T13:38:19.425-07:00NEW FEATURES!!!, Eden, 5.00 stars, 1 page (JUST JOKING!!!) So...you might have seen the new poll I put up on the right-hand side of the screen. Every month I'll try to have a new one. It's just kind of fun for me to see what kinds of people visit my blog, and you might also enjoy seeing what other people's opinion's are on things, or what they do, and things like that. There's one new feature. Another one is what I mentioned in the last Anne post: I'm going to try to have a place where you can suggest books for me to review. Tell me what you think of these, suggest ideas, and of course, PLEASE COMMENT!Edenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10500931398414063709noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258037007474275763.post-64864189836164764332012-07-20T07:41:00.002-07:002012-07-20T07:41:19.568-07:00Anne's House of Dreams, L. M. Montgomery, 4.4 stars, 227 pages Ah, Anne. I didn't forget about you, I promise! Okay, maybe a little. But I'll try to hurry up and finish the series, and then we can move on to the many other books I've read/am reading.
Anne has finally married her beloved ______*, and now they have moved to their house of dreams. At the part of the island called Glen St. Mary, Anne reassures her husband that with the water for a backyard, Miss Cornelia's peppy visits, and the gleaming lighthouse where old Captain Jim lives, she could never be lonely, and can't imagine anyone else who would--until she meets Leslie Moore. Leslie's tragic childhood lasted until she was an adult, and it takes Anne's "kindred spirit" to shine a light into Leslie's dark world.
* I can't say who she marries; it would spoil everything!!!
In my opinion, this is the second saddest (second to the eighth) yet sweetest book in the series. The title makes it sound like it's all about the house, and I wasn't looking forward to reading it, but then: You can't judge a book by its title!
I would also like to say that if you've heard of a book that I might've read, and 1) you want to hear what I have to say about it or 2) you're wondering what it's about, comment! I might be able to have a spot specially marked for that...Edenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10500931398414063709noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258037007474275763.post-89249407153828377312012-07-16T13:08:00.002-07:002012-07-16T13:08:24.981-07:00I'm so sorry again/ Harry Potter and the Sorcerer/Philosopher's Stone, J. K. Rowling, grrr...ratings, 309/223 pages Okay, so after camping (yes, in the woods) for almost two weeks, then heading to a camp where computer access is hard to find, once again, I've read about 2,000,000 books and haven't blogged. I'll TRY to make up for it!!!!

As you saw, this is supposed to be about Harry Potter, and I know almost everyone knows the basic story, but, oh well. Also, you saw I had the Philosopher's Stone up on the title, and that's the English version, just in case you live in the UK. Same with the two page numbers. Anyway...

Harry Potter is a wizard. But the thing is, he has no clue, because his horrid uncle and aunt (who he has to stay with as his parents were killed by Voldemort, second most powerful wizard in the world) hide all the mysterious letters Harry receives. Uncle Vernon does his best to prevent it, but Hagrid (someone from the school) comes anyway and leads him to buy supplies for his new school, Hogwarts. There Harry makes new friends, learns interesting subjects, and has a place he can finally call home. But Hagrid is acting suspicious about something, and it takes Harry coming face to face with Voldemort to sort it out.

And the rating: if you've read this series, you'll agree that these books seem so different (in a good way) from others that you can't rate them, so I'm not.Edenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10500931398414063709noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258037007474275763.post-88206796809904186842012-06-21T05:56:00.000-07:002012-06-21T05:56:22.978-07:00Hi! I've won my first writing contest! There was an essay contest at my school about healthy living, and I entered. I won! A local newspaper reporter came and took our picture (me and the 6 other kids that entered), so I'll be in the newspaper soon! And I can't wait to buy some books with my Barnes & Noble gift card prize! Here's my essay:

In
order to survive, we need some important things including food, sleep, and exercise.
But if you have too much or too little of these resources, it’s hard to
survive, which is why you need to find a healthy balance.

You
know what having a good balance with nourishing and “junk” food means: not
eating candy all the time, making sure you eat lots of fruits and vegetables,
etc. Even though green beans are healthy, don’t eat them for breakfast, lunch,
and dinner because you need a diet full of variety. And make sure you don’t eat
TOO much food of any kind.

Going along with the topic
of balance, if you sleep too much or too little, believe it or not, it’s bad
for you. If you sleep too little, obviously, your body doesn’t have the energy
it needs to operate, but if you sleep too much, you become sluggish and lazy,
and don’t get as much exercise. This can cause diabetes and obesity.

Regarding exercise, make
sure you have enough of it. And then again, make sure you don’t have too much.
Now you’re probably thinking, that sounds ridiculous!, but there is such thing
as exercising too much. You know what happens when someone doesn’t exercise:
they become overweight and potentially lazy. If someone over exercises, their body starts burning muscle instead of fat,
which isn’t healthy.

So, in order to live a
healthy life, you must find a balance in these areas.

M. Montgomery, 4.1 stars, 258 pages You might notice that this has the lowest rating of the Anne series, and it's not because it's a bad book at ALL, the beginning just wasn't that great. OH! And I finished the entire series (eight books) almost a week ago. Let's see if I can catch up with my writing!
Anne, waiting for Gilbert to finish medical school, is a principal in the Summerside school. She lives in a 'dear old cottage' called Windy Poplars, and Anne finds it perfect there--until school starts. Now she faces a problem: the Pringles. Known as the royal family, they quickly let Anne know that she is NOT who they wanted for principal. Befriending two widows and Rebecca Dew are inly two exciting triumphs Anne has.Edenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10500931398414063709noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258037007474275763.post-335706122007997472012-05-26T16:54:00.000-07:002012-05-26T16:54:00.400-07:00The Seven Chairs, Part 5 Last time...
"But you better be right about the flying part." "Sure thing, missus," Bob bounded over to get a chair, and headed over to the cash register. Mr. and Mrs King followed, unsure if this is the right thing to do. Mrs. King thought so; but the chair wasn't really fancy, but is the flying part was true (and Mrs. King didn't think it was), Sophie wouldn't mind, and would love it all the better, or so she hoped. And yahoo! kids are the star, and are there to investigate.
Hoot: When Roy's face is smashed against the window of the school bus by a bully, he spots a bare-footed ripped-shirt kid running away from the school bus. A new Mother Paula's pancake place is also being built down the street. And to top it off, Roy is getting pushed around by another bully, Beatrice. Can these three things be connected? Maybe getting your head smashed against a window IS good--if it helps you into an adventure of a lifetime.
Scat: Nick and his friends aren't necessarily sad when their biography teacher goes missing during a field trip to a swamp. But the reason for her absence doesn't fool Nick and Marta. They decide to dig in deeper and find themselves caught with illegal oil pumpers, a guy who seems to know where their teacher is, and wild panthers.
Flush: Noah's dad has done some pretty wild stuff before, but this time he's gone too far: sinking a casino boat. Noah's mom's not happy, but Noah and his sister Abbey understand more: Dusty Muleman, owner of the boat, has been dumping human waste into the ocean--or so their dad claims. Wanting to believe him, the siblings search more, asking Lice, one of Dusty's former employees, about it, but before he can share Dusty's secret, he disappears. So Shelly, Lice's girlfriend steps in and takes control, and helps with the plan: flush, flush, flush!
Chomp: Except for chameleons, ever since a frozen solid dead one clonked him on the head, Wahoo's dad, Mickey, has always been more comfortable around animals than people. Because of the chameleon, and a concussion, Mickey has no job, and refuses every one offered to him. But Wahoo signs his dad up for a reality TV show animal provider/trainer anyway. Besides, they're backyard's (literally) a zoo, with more than enough animals. When he hears then news, Mickey isn't happy, and it doesn't help to hear that the show is run by Derek Badger. Derek proves to be impatient, and lazy, not a reality TV star. In the Everglades, Tuna, a girl with a dad who's drunk more than half the time joins them. Then Derek goes missing. And then, Tuna's dad shows up drunk, and with a gun. Worst of all, Mickey's dealing with the drunk guy, while wishing he'd never signed up for this. Tuna and Wahoo are trying to free him, and find Derek Badger. Complete chaos in the Everglades!Edenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10500931398414063709noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258037007474275763.post-53352601819921696462012-05-26T14:03:00.007-07:002012-05-26T14:03:57.842-07:00Three Cups of Tea, Greg Mortenson & David Oliver Relin, it's a true story so I can't really rate it, 155 pages I've heard that this book was exaggerated, but I didn't know what was exaggerated and what wasn't, so I read it. Overstated or not, this is an incredible story that everyone should read...

Greg Mortenson, on his way to climb K2, the world's second tallest mountain, gets lost and, cold and hungry, wanders into a Pakistani village where he is taken in willingly. Moved by their kindness, he promises to return to build a school for the children there. Back then, all the kids had for a school was a teacher that came three days a week, mud, sticks, and cold hard dirt. Greg Mortenson changed that, and built over 78 schools after.

There is 3 different books written by Greg Mortenson about this story, Three Cups of Tea (the adult version), Three Cups of Tea (the young reader's edition, which is what I read), and Listen to The Wind (a picture book which I also read).
Edenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10500931398414063709noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258037007474275763.post-71695900652534926132012-05-26T13:36:00.002-07:002012-05-29T14:50:37.024-07:00Matilda, Roald Dahl, 4.5 stars, 240 pages Okay, I'm REALLY sorry I haven't been posting book reviews. The end of the school year is busy!!!
Matilda is a 5-year-old genius with parents who don't notice her extraordinary brain. They advise her to sit down in front of the telly, and 'shut that rubbish of a book.' When Matilda finally is sent to school, she meets "The Trunchbull", a headmistress with amazing powers to <strike>love</strike> hate kids. With Miss Honey, Matilda's kind teacher, Matilda devises a plan to rout Miss Trunchbull.
First time around when you read this book, the climax is spectacular. I just finished rereading it like 5 minutes ago, and it wasn't what I remembered. But you've got to read this book, or reread it, or re-reread, or re-re-reread!Edenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10500931398414063709noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258037007474275763.post-27924130870510771272012-05-16T04:01:00.002-07:002012-05-16T04:01:22.029-07:00The Seven Chairs, Part 4 Last time:

It was Sophie’s birthday! All Sophie
wanted was a chair. Why? Because her favorite old one broke. Her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. King, were out looking for the best possible chair they could give
their daughter. They looked and searched and searched and looked everywhere,
everywhere except Bob’s Furniture Shop. Mrs. King said her feet hurt, but in
the end Mr. King insisted that they check one more shop up there, “even though
it doesn’t look promising.”

They
walked into Bob’s Furniture Shop just as Bob was putting the price tags on some
regular chairs. The ordinary chairs looked just like the magic ones. Mrs. King
asked Bob, “Why are those chairs you’re pricing now so much cheaper than those
over there?” She pointed a magic chair. Bob leaned in close. “Listen, lady,” he
said. “I can sell you those chairs over there that are 59 dollars and 99 cents,
and I’ll guarantee you’ll love ‘em ‘cause those ones are magic. They can fly.” Bob
leaned back with a grin. “If it don’t fly you bring it back and get your money
back with an extra 10 dollars.” Sophie’s parents glanced at each other.
Edenhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10500931398414063709noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3258037007474275763.post-26172375434759360692012-05-14T15:40:00.002-07:002012-05-14T15:41:37.710-07:00SO SORRY I HAVE NOT BEEN WRITING!!!!!!!The reason for this is that I have been in London, but I got back on the 12th!
